Week Three Overview

Essential Question: What is the rationale for the evaluation tool your group created to allow teachers to determine the use of serious games in the classroom?

Overview

Dates to save:

TUESDAY 4:30 AKDT (or 5:30 – waiting to confirm with Verena) Web Ex Meeting (invitation will be sent one hour prior to the meeting)

THURSDAY 4:30 AKDT Twitter Session (#ETLEAD) Hosts: Keri and Meagan!

In this meeting, we will have the Gamifi-ED OOC orientation and a bootcamp on using Google Hangouts. We’ll talk about whether we can manage hosting some of the OOC videoconferences and if so what our role will be.

Preparation

Look through Vicki’s students’ groups and consider their criteria for serious games/non serious games.

Assignment

In some weeks of this class, you will participate in activities meant to strengthen the Gamifi-ED experience for both students and teachers. This is an aspect of leadership which is quite important. As leaders in technology, and in innovation, exploring those concepts which might make teachers uncomfortable, and assisting them in seeing the potential uses of these innovations will be a role that can be quite welcome in a school district. When you engage in activities meant to strengthen the Gamifi-ED experience, you will post on your group page in the Gamifi-ED Wiki

Teams:

(To get to your team wiki, go to the Gamifi-ED Wiki, click Projects, and then click the name of your group under Higher Education Gamemakers.)

Assignment for Week Three

Last week, your team came up with a list of criteria for serious games in the classroom. Now, I’d like to emphasize, these games don’t only have to be for children aged 13+ (even though that is the population we are working with in Vicki’s class). They could be for any classroom…and should be sufficiently inclusive.

This week, check into Vicki’s students’ work. What are they finding and posting? What do they value in games? Interact with them if you wish – mentor them as they examine the questions posted in each of their groups.

With your group, create a rubric, a checklist, or another type of evaluation tool to help people (remember you are starting with Vicki’s students, but this should be for teachers as well) to evaluate the suitability for a serious game in their classroom. This is a big task! So do put in the time with your group to help this happen.

Blogging

About Week Three

This week you will blog, sharing the rationale of your group for the evaluation tool that you created. You only have a reflection blog this week and you do not have to comment on the blogs of others (although you can if you wish). Your blog is due on Sunday and should meet the criteria of any blog posting during the week. Just document your work with your group as you share in the blog.

Due Sunday:

Comment on the blogs of others.

Create a blog entry outlining the way that you contributed to the learning of others, and the impact of your interaction with others through social media (Twitter, blog responses) on your learning.

Share this blog using the #etlead tag in Twitter.

Submit the URL for your Blog Postings to Livetext on Sunday.
